THE ROUTE.

Summary and profile, day by day, of the route.

Welcome to Loudenvielle! The big day is finally here. Check into your room, pick up your welcome pack, and prepare your bike and accessories for tomorrow. Your guide and support crew will walk you through the itinerary for your journey into the heart of the Pyrenees.

Meal(s):

Dinner

Destination(s):
Loudenvielle

The only way to kick off this Pyrenees experience is with a climb out of Loudenvielle! The first pass is Col de Peyresourde, a steady ascent that can be done with relative ease. The descent to Bagnères-de-Luchon also has good asphalt and is not too complicated. After Bagnères, we’ll enjoy a nice flat stretch along the Pique river before heading to the most demanding pass of the day.

From Saléchan, we’ll turn off in the direction of Port de Balès – a pass that starts out easy but becomes more demanding as the kilometers go by, with the most difficult section at the end.

A fast and technical descent will take us back to Col de Peyresourde, where we’ll climb back up to summit Peyragudes, whose landing strip is immortalized in the classic James Bond film “Tomorrow Never Dies.” Once finished, we’ll descend to the chalet for a restorative massage before dining at a nearby fine restaurant.

Meal(s):

Breakfast / Lunch / Dinner

Destination(s):
Peyresourde, Bagnères-de-Luchon, Port de Balès and Peyragudes

Distance:
110 kilometers (68 miles)
Elevation gain: 2890 meters (9481 feet)

Accommodation:
Chalet de Soos

This is perhaps the most legendary route of our tour. Warm up on favorable terrain as we head to the town of Arreau, which has seen the Tour de France pass through countless times. We’ll then start the climb to Col d’Aspin, which will be good preparation for the dreaded Col du Tourmalet. Refreshments await us at Sainte-Marie de Campan, before we tackle the Col du Tourmalet.

Once we accomplish our greatest challenge of the day, we’ll head back down to Sainte-Marie de Campan to enjoy a pizza before a final (but far more forgiving) climb. Hourquette d’Ancizan is not very difficult, but it will feel demanding at the end of such a full day. After we finish all three climbs, there’s still a bit of uphill terrain as we make our way back to Loudenvielle.

Our third route through the Pyrenees takes us to Saint-Lary-Soulan, where the beautiful Col de Portet begins. This pass is considered one of the hardest climbs in France, but its beauty more than compensates for the effort. On the descent we’ll turn off to climb the final section of Pla d’Adet, a ski resort where stages of the Tour de France often conclude. We’ll then return to Saint-Lary to enjoy lunch before tackling the last ascent of the Col d’Azet, bringing us to the ski resort of Val Louron. Our final descent will take us back to Loudenvielle.

The last day starts with a nice “flat” stretch to Saint-Lary-Soulan, where we’ll continue climbing gently until beginning our ascent to the Lacs du Néouvielle. This is a beautiful climb through the protected Néouvielle Nature Reserve. At the summit we’ll enjoy a breathtaking view of the lakes. From there, we’ll head to the other summit, the Lac de Cap-de-Long. We’ll have lunch at the bottom before heading back on the final flat stretch to Loudenvielle. That evening we’ll celebrate over a gala dinner at the Auberge des Aryelets.
